Marvel’s Wolverine: 60 FPS with ray tracing on base PS5

Insomniac Games says Performance Mode will run at 60 FPS with ray tracing on both PS5 versions; the target was set at the start of development.

Insomniac Games confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine will run at 60 frames per second with ray tracing enabled in Performance Mode on both PlayStation 5 versions. The studio set the 60 FPS ray-tracing target at the start of development. The game is scheduled to launch in September.

The studio described systems designed to make environments react to player actions and combat. Foliage responds to wind and movement, debris shifts during fights, and most movable objects can be damaged or destroyed. Broken props and scattered debris remain in the scene after encounters rather than resetting immediately.

Insomniac tied the visual and physical systems to the combat design. Encounters are built around multiple enemies in confined spaces and close-quarters brawling. Physics-based destruction lets items such as bottles and furniture break and stay broken as players move through an area.

Senior technical director Andy Last summarized the studio’s reactive-world goals: ‘Combat will leave a big mess, and we want the world to reflect that.’

Insomniac’s senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed described the technical focus on character-environment interactions and the tools used to create more dynamic scenes.

The game includes varied locations, including Canadian wilderness and the alleys of Madripoor, and the studio noted that environmental effects and foliage will differ by setting and by the intensity of combat.

By targeting a 60 FPS ray-tracing Performance Mode early, Insomniac integrated the specification into art, animation and engine decisions rather than treating it as a late optimization. The September release will provide the first opportunity to confirm how those systems perform in the final product.
