Overwatch expects players to relearn the game with each new hero

At BlizzCon 2026, Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller said Blizzard intentionally ‘resets the mastery curve’ by adding new heroes each season so players must relearn parts of the game.

At BlizzCon 2026, Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller discussed a design choice to force periodic relearning. He made the remarks during a private session at the event and described the practice as a deliberate ‘reset of the mastery curve.’

Keller said the studio now introduces a new hero every season. He pointed to the current season’s relaunch, when Blizzard released five new characters at once and restored the Overwatch name after the Overwatch 2 era. That launch created new hero combinations and strategies that changed competitive hierarchies quickly.

Keller noted the regular hero cadence keeps the in‑game meta in flux and alters player behavior. He pointed to a measurable drop in toxic behavior after the five-hero launch, attributing the decline to players experimenting with the new characters.

Balancing remains a core challenge. Overwatch’s roster exceeds 50 playable heroes, each assigned to roles such as offense, defense, support and tank. Keller acknowledged that players form tier lists and dominant strategies over time, which then require targeted adjustments from the development team.

Keller described the balance approach as preserving each hero’s core identity while adjusting numbers and abilities so matches remain fair. He added the team does not make changes for their own sake; balance work aims to keep play competitive and varied.

Launched in 2016, Overwatch continues to receive updates and new heroes. Keller said the plan is to continue seasonal hero releases so veteran players and newcomers encounter changing match dynamics and new choices each season.
