Pokémon GO 10th anniversary: Free maxed Mewtwo

Scopely Explore, the studio behind Pokémon GO, is marking the game’s 10th anniversary with free Timed Research running from Aug. 12 to Sept. 6, 2026. The research ends with an encounter that awards players a Mewtwo with maxed stats and a Special Background.

All Trainers worldwide can access the Timed Research in the game at no cost. Tasks must be completed and rewards claimed before Sept. 6; any unclaimed items will expire after the event ends.

The Mewtwo granted by the research arrives with fully boosted stats and the capture encounter includes a Special Background. The reward also unlocks the third Mega Level for Mega Mewtwo Y, which increases its Mega potential in formats where Mega Evolutions are allowed.

Mewtwo is available with moves suited to multiple roles. Psystrike and Shadow Ball support its Psychic-type attack role, while Ice Beam, Flamethrower and Thunderbolt offer coverage options for raids and player-versus-player battles.

A separate distribution took place for attendees at a Times Square event on July 9, 2026. Trainers who received a Mewtwo at that event obtained a different version with distinct stats and rewards. A Times Square Background Mewtwo will be distributed at a later date. The anniversary Timed Research is independent from in-person giveaways.

The anniversary event is part of a wider program of in-game events and community meetups organized to mark 10 years of play. Players who want the free Mewtwo should open the Timed Research in the app, complete the tasks and claim the encounter before Sept. 6, 2026.
