Prime Video’s God of War replaces Kratos after actor injury

Prime Video is recasting Kratos after Ryan Hurst tore his bicep during a late June stunt in Vancouver, requiring surgery and a recovery that conflicts with production.

Prime Video and its production partners are recasting Kratos after lead actor Ryan Hurst tore his bicep during a stunt on the Vancouver set in late June. The injury required surgical repair and a recovery timeline that prevents him from returning to the physically demanding role.

Medical guidance estimates four to six months for return of basic arm function and up to a year for full strength. Hurst had spent months preparing for the role and added about 40 pounds of muscle; he appeared in an official first-look image earlier this year.

Production has been paused since the injury. Four episodes had been filmed before the halt; those scenes will need to be reshot with a new actor in the title role.

Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios explored a shorter window for Hurst to rejoin the shoot, with preparations to resume in mid-August ahead of a planned mid-October restart. After reviewing the recovery timetable and the series schedule, the studios determined recasting was necessary.

The remainder of the confirmed cast remains attached, including Callum Vinson as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Ed Skrein as Baldur and Alastair Duncan as Mimir. The production is still determining whether Vinson will continue in the role given the delay. No replacement for Kratos has been announced.

The series, created by Ronald D. Moore, is produced for Prime Video. There is no official release date. Studios cited the actor’s recovery timeline and the production schedule as the reasons for the decision.
