Squadron 42 Gets Steam Page Ahead of 2027 Release

Cloud Imperium Games has opened a Steam page for Squadron 42, its single-player Star Citizen game, with release planned for the second quarter of 2027.

Cloud Imperium Games has opened a Steam page for Squadron 42 ahead of its planned release in the second quarter of 2027. Players can add the game to their wishlists and follow updates on Steam.

The game follows a United Empire of Earth Navy recruit in the year 2945. The character joins the crew of a large capital ship during a war involving human outlaws and hostile alien forces. Players will build relationships with crew members and make decisions that affect the character’s story and legacy.

Gameplay will include space combat, ground operations, exploration and interactive cinematic sequences. Cloud Imperium Games describes missions involving high-speed dogfights, large battles and situations that require decisions beyond the use of weapons.

The cast includes Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, Jonathan Bailey, Gary Oldman, Alix Wilton Reagan, Henry Cavill, Ben Mendelsohn, Jane Perry, Andy Serkis, John Rhys-Davies and Mark Strong. The studio says the characters will appear during gameplay as well as in cinematic scenes.

Squadron 42 was previously expected to launch in late 2026. Studio founder and CEO Chris Roberts announced that the release had been moved to the second quarter of 2027 to avoid the launch window for Grand Theft Auto 6.

“It is truly something special, and so needs the opportunity to have the focus of the wider gaming world,” Roberts said.

Squadron 42 is being developed as a standalone single-player game in the Star Citizen universe. Star Citizen, the related multiplayer project, passed $1 billion in funding earlier this year. Its persistent online world includes player-run economic systems, while Squadron 42 will center on a story-driven campaign.
