Torchlight Infinite’s Tartarus season adds monster prison

Torchlight Infinite’s Tartarus season launches on Steam Oct. 15 with a prison system that lets players force captured monsters to fight, then battle the survivors for loot.

Torchlight Infinite’s Tartarus season launches on Steam on Oct. 15. The free-to-play action RPG update from XD adds a prison system in which players capture defeated monsters, make them fight and consume one another, then battle the survivors for rewards.

The Tartarus system has 16 prison cells. Players can place captured monsters inside and combine them into stronger enemies. A final riot encounter pits players against the resulting group, with rewards determined by the monsters they created.

Tartarus encounters can drop Recommendation Letters. Players can use these items to recruit Followers, which provide offensive and defensive abilities for different character builds. Followers can learn standard Tartarus skills, including modified versions of existing abilities, and rarer Origin Tartarus skills with more specialized effects.

The season adds Youga’s third hero trait, The Ultimate One. Youga uses a Clockwork Core to travel between alternate realities and absorb abilities from other versions of himself. Players can attach a spell to the Core as a spell tangle, causing it to orbit the device and activate during combat.

Youga can develop into three forms. Spacetime Dictator traps spells in a repeating area and delays incoming damage. Spacetime Conqueror focuses on teleportation and links enemies so damage spreads between them. Spacetime Overlord uses abilities from the other forms to create stronger spell variants. Thea’s Wisdom of the Gods trait has also been reworked.

The Afterlight seasonal system is becoming part of the main game. XD has changed its encounters, progression and rewards, and added a talent constellation that lets players choose how to approach the mode and which rewards to pursue. Players can slow the mode’s pace while developing their character and increase it later.

Supreme Showdown adds the Star’s Fall mechanic. Players must bounce falling energy balls while fighting. Successful hits increase their damage, while missing three balls in a row triggers a fatal attack.

The endgame maps have been rotated, replacing older locations and reducing repeated areas. Divine Ascent now has 150 floors and a revised difficulty curve. Players who clear a tier quickly without dying can skip up to five floors at a time. The Battle Pactspirit reward has moved from floor 35 to floor 50.

Other changes include new active and support skills, additional support slots, updates to Renewed Memory and legendary equipment, and visual improvements. A revised loot filter makes drops appear faster by hiding items outside a player’s selected requirements. XD has also updated the friend list, trade house, character statistics, item tooltips and quick price-check tools.

Torchlight Infinite is available for free on Steam. The game includes optional purchases that can provide advantages at high-end levels.
