Can Riot Games Deliver Another Hit Like League of Legends?

Riot Games is one of the most controversial studios in the gaming industry, betting on a hyped mechanic — and winning big. Yes, we’re talking about LoL — League of Legends, the game that won over fans of the Dota map for Warcraft III.

While the community was hoping for Blizzard to act and release a standalone game, League of Legends by Riot Games was already pulling that audience in. How successfully? So much so that it gained the status of an official esports discipline. Not bad, right?

But this was far from the studio’s only project. And while not all of their games became global hits, many gained solid popularity. The company itself grew from a small team into a large-scale corporation.

Who Are Riot Games and What Are They Famous For?

The story of Riot Games began nearly 20 years ago. In 2006, two graduates of the University of Southern California decided to found a company focused on AAA games with continuous development.

Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill aimed to replicate the success of the Dota map from Warcraft III, and spent three years working on their project. In 2008, venture capital funds and the Chinese giant Tencent joined the process, speeding things up. So much so, that by 2009, the debut release of League of Legends by Riot Games took place.

The game became a bestseller — if you can call an F2P (Free to Play) title that. Yes, it had paid perks at launch, like skins and champions, but the game itself remained free to access.

A classic MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) with gameplay reminiscent of Dota, familiar mechanics, but with a brand-new concept and lore. Does it sound like plagiarism? Maybe — but it launched five years before Dota 2, which led to quite expected results.

In just three years, Riot Games LoL turned into a major esports discipline (the game now has around 130 million active players), right as the esports scene was starting to grow. Just a year later, Riot Games became a subsidiary of Tencent and kept expanding rapidly. For example, in 2016, new games in the LoL universe were announced, once again proving the success of the concept.

Other Riot Games Projects

Everyone knows League of Legends by Riot Games, but what about other titles? Here is a complete list of the company's projects:

  • TFT
  • LoR
  • Wild Rift
  • Valorant
  • Arcane

Impressive, isn't it? And this is just for the period of 2019-2020, but the brand's potential and the resources of the parent corporation allow for much more. We'll talk about that later, but for now, let's briefly review the listed products.

TFT (Teamfight Tactics)

Auto battler with LoL heroes. The game appeared as part of Riot Games' strategy to expand the League of Legends universe but quickly gained independent status. Although it didn't become too popular, it has a dedicated audience that enjoys spending time in complex battles.

LoR (Legends of Runeterra)

A card game in the League of Legends universe by Riot Games, but with mechanics from other popular titles such as Magic: The Gathering. In fact, the developers were inspired by Magic: The Gathering when creating the project, so it's not surprising that the games have similar concepts.

Wild Rift

Mobile version of League of Legends by Riot Games. The same gameplay, heroes, mechanics, even account, but with a focus on mobile gaming. The game has become very popular among fans of the original, gaining tournament elements and a competitive component.

Valorant

A tactical shooter that was conceived as a competitor to CS:GO (CS2) and fully deserved this status. Currently, the project has over 18 million active players, and the title itself is included in the list of esports disciplines. In addition, this is where celebrities appear, giving virtual concerts and digital shows. This is the only game from the studio that does not overlap with the League of Legends universe by Riot Games.

Arcane

An animated masterpiece in the best traditions of League of Legends by Riot Games. Here you have your favorite champions and a story that fully fits into the concept of the original title. By the way, the series received very high ratings from critics, game fans, and even ordinary viewers.

Does Riot Still Only Have LoL?

Everyone associates Riot Games with their first creation. Yes, 10-11 million daily players is undoubtedly a success. However, the studio has long gone beyond just one project. The active audience of other titles is quite comparable to LoL in some cases. Moreover, the company is not going to stop there.

Even now, as you read this, the studio is actively developing its projects and working on fundamentally new products. Among them are:

  • The mysterious Project L (2XKO).
  • A full-fledged MMORPG in the League of Legends universe by Riot Games.

The brand's portfolio is also constantly expanding with merchandise, internal products for existing games, and even animated films and series based on LoL.

Can They Repeat the Success of League of Legends?

This question will remain without a definite answer, and there are several reasons for this:

  • Riot Games' LoL was released at a good time and in a format that the market needed at that moment. The only competitor was the Dota map for Warcraft III. Agree, a complete project looks more interesting than just an add-on for a strategy that was already not the newest at that time.
  • League of Legends by Riot Games is distributed under the F2P model, which was rare in 2006. Cosmetic monetization and accessibility in most regions also contributed to its development. In fact, the community expected a similar format, which also played to the project's advantage.
  • Riot Games was a pioneer of MOBA games in its time. Now the trends are somewhat different, but the studio is actively adapting to them, modernizing the gameplay and visual components of both LoL and Valorant, as well as other games. And also experimenting with completely new products that we will get acquainted with in the near future.

By the way, Valorant was supposed to become the second LoL, but with a different setting and atmosphere. This did not happen, despite all the bravado of the developers and the expectations of the fans. A failure? Not at all, because the project has a fairly large and active audience. Not at the level of the studio's first game, but still a good, in-demand product.

But the developers don't just live with thoughts of current successes. New projects of the company have already been announced, which may well repeat the triumph of League of Legends by Riot Games.

What Can Fans Expect from Riot's New Projects?

It would seem that with LoL and Valorant, and the concept of constant game support, why are new titles needed? It's simple – expanding the audience and searching for better game distribution models. And Riot Games is already making progress here.

As of 2025, at least two new projects are known, one of which we will see this year. The second, according to rumors, has been in development since 2015 and still remains a mystery.

Nevertheless, today you will learn about the planned releases and the strategy chosen by Riot Games. Most likely, players will be satisfied with the company's upcoming projects, although it is still too early to talk about success at the level of Riot Games' LoL.

Project L (2XKO) — Fighting Game with League Heroes

Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, but with champions from League of Legends by Riot Games. Shader graphics, modern animation, spectacular fights and fatalities, blood, violence, and dynamic battles.

All this will soon reach the screens of Riot Games' LoL fans and could theoretically become a real success for the company. Teasers and gameplay demonstrations look promising, as do early reviews from players who have tried the game's mechanics.

We will find out the result this year. The main thing is that the optimization and the overall level of project implementation do not disappoint. And here, at least, there is reasonable optimism, unlike the next expected product.

MMORPG — The Biggest Hope of Fans

An MMORPG with the concept of Riot Games' LoL resembles the situation with the Cow Level in Diablo. The developers do not confirm its existence, but they do not deny it either. Like Schrödinger's cat, we can only guess whether the studio is developing a full-fledged MMO.

Seriously though, Marc Merrill has confirmed that work on the project is in an active phase but noted that competing with titles like WoW (World of Warcraft) and Final Fantasy will not be easy. There are suspicions that the studio will move away from the canons and outdated mechanics and focus on more active gameplay in the style of Genshin Impact, but with the champions (or at least the concept) of League of Legends by Riot Games or Legends of Runeterra.

Whatever the case, the company will have to work very hard to attract the target audience and, moreover, retain them in the project.

The Studio is Not Rushing — Wants Quality, Like with Arcane

As recent releases show, rushing in such matters leads to low ratings from critics and players. Poor optimization, bugs, gameplay failures, technical problems, graphics artifacts, mechanics from the 2000s – all these are red flags that companies dreaming of successful releases should avoid.

The good news is that Riot Games is not in a hurry to release new products, focusing on completing their development. This means that the games will run on the hardware stated in the minimum requirements without significant lag, bugs, and other problems.

The bad news is that it is unknown when Riot Games will release new titles. More precisely, the fighting game 2XKO will be released in 2025, but the fate of the MMORPG is still undetermined. There are rumors that the launch is being prepared for 2026, but they have no basis, so it is worth being skeptical of such forecasts.

Conclusion: Should We Expect a New "Explosion" Like with LoL?

League of Legends by Riot Games was released at the perfect time and with an optimal distribution model. A warmed-up audience eager for a standalone MOBA, a lack of competition in the market, and strong external funding led to LoL attracting around 130 million active players. Is it realistic to repeat this success? Far from certain.

Where does the skepticism come from? Several major AAA game releases are planned for 2025 and 2026. Not the best time for competition. Although, on the other hand, LoL fans are still waiting for new products from Riot Games.

And while players may react rather coldly to 2XKO, the success of the MMO will depend on many factors. For example:

  • The elaboration of the lore, mechanics, and story of the game
  • Implementation, including the technical aspect
  • Meeting the expectations of the community
  • The size of the world and the amount of content
  • Distribution and monetization models

But since there are no even the slightest details about the upcoming title, it is too early to predict its popularity.
