Everything About Agents in Valorant

Everything About Agents in Valorant

Valorant characters feature unique ability sets, parameters, and traits that transform gameplay.

Each agent masters a specific combat style and fits various tactical scenarios. Some focus on stealth and recon, others excel at tanking, supporting teammates, or clearing entire zones.

While meta matters, every hero can serve as a valuable counter-pick or even a game-changer in late rounds. Agents unlock gradually or through in-game currency. At the start, only five agents are available:

  • Brimstone

  • Phoenix

  • Sage

  • Sova

  • Viper

The first two additional agents unlock at account levels 5 and 10; others require completing agent contracts up to level 5. Alternatively, players can unlock agents using VP (Valorant Points) or via special events.

In this article, we’ll go through every agent in the game, their roles and features, and suggest which ones are best for beginners.

How to choose a character in Valorant?

In Valorant, characters are divided by roles and abilities. Your choice of agent determines tactics and playstyle, both personal and team-based.

For example, a well-balanced team can control the map more effectively and quickly dispatch enemies even in tough situations. Of course, enemy experience, counter‑picks, and tactics matter too, but properly selected agents with synergy make matches easier.

By the way, if you play in a fixed squad, it’s easier to pick an agent for each specific match. If you don’t, focus on the abilities and role of the character that are most important for winning with random teammates.

Abilities

Valorant characters have three types of abilities:
– Signature: the primary ability tied to the agent’s role, used for combat or tactical advantage
– Basic: two simple abilities with short cooldowns, also role‑dependent; typically support skills that work area‑wide or are aimed
– Ultimate: the most powerful ability, used to annihilate enemies, resurrect an ally, etc.

Each new agent gains unique abilities tied to their role and lore. There are only four roles, but their combinations can greatly increase a team’s chance of success.

Roles

Valorant heroes fall into four classes with unique mechanics and skills. The general principle of abilities depends on the role, but each character’s animations and effects are unique. Let’s look at them in detail:
Role — Description
– Duelists — typical damage dealers who are self‑sufficient in mobility and survivability; excel at high‑damage attacks on enemies
– Initiators — scouts and stealthers; their main task is to find enemies, explore areas, and prepare positions for team attacks
– Sentinels — a blend of tank and healer with good survivability, control, and sometimes enough damage to eliminate enemies independently
– Controllers — supports with powerful area control, periodic damage abilities, crowd‑control, and debuffs

Valorant characters are divided by roles. Some may seem stronger or weaker, but in skilled hands their potential remains very high. Even non‑meta agents can carry a match if the player knows their mechanics inside out. Therefore, it’s recommended to study all available agents.

All characters in Valorant

In Valorant, a new agent might look much cooler than earlier ones — but is that really the case? Not always. Most heroes, including older ones, remain relevant and useful in a wide range of situations.

A character’s effectiveness depends on the player controlling them — their skills, shooting accuracy, and ability usage. That’s why we can say that all Valorant agents are important in their own way. And that’s one of the reasons you should learn more about every character available in the game.

Jett

No longer a newcomer, but still a valuable Duelist — fast and deadly in skilled hands. Her high jump, mobility, control, and powerful ultimate let her shine in any skirmish.

Phoenix

Like other Valorant heroes, this Duelist boasts strong abilities — including AoE, control, and a blink that can save him in tough situations. A great damage-dealer for those who like to lead the charge and dictate the pace of the match.

Reyna

Like all Valorant Duelists, this character is completely self-sufficient even in intense fights. She has self-heal, invulnerability, and a rage mode that boosts reaction and shooting speed — leaving enemies with no chance.

Raze

A top-tier Duelist when it comes to raw damage. Nearly all her abilities deal AoE damage and include useful side effects like control or mobility reduction.

Yoru

Valorant Duelist agents are built for eliminating enemies — and this one is no exception. He can blink, hide in an alternate dimension, create clones, and take out opponents ninja-style.

Neon

This Duelist loves to stylishly eliminate any enemies in sight, just like other Valorant heroes. No AOE skills, but full focus on speed, defense, and heavy damage to a single target. A perfect choice for solo aggressive players.

Iso

Like all Valorant Duelist-class heroes, this agent focuses on swift kills. He dominates 1v1 encounters. His abilities deal damage and apply control, and his ultimate rarely leaves anyone standing.

Sova

The best Initiator among starting agents. Has scouting abilities that allow him to quickly locate and eliminate isolated enemies. A must-learn, as he remains useful even in endgame scenarios.

Breach

One of the best Initiators in Valorant. Possesses strong crowd control and can single-handedly handle groups of enemies. Stun and finish — a tactic that works.

Skye

Not a new agent, but still a valuable Initiator for team play. Has recon, crowd control, and healing — all you need to support damage dealers and other roles in tough matches.

KAY/O

A relatively new Initiator in Valorant with useful team-based abilities. Can hold his own against groups of enemies by weakening those caught in his AOE.

Fade

One of the best agents for beginners. Offers strong control, proactive scouting, and traps that are nearly inescapable. Perfect for solo hunters.

Gekko

If you know how to unlock agents in Valorant, focus on this Initiator. His skills target solo enemies and deal significant damage. With the right strategy, he's nearly unstoppable.

Sage

One of the best starter picks in Valorant, as this Sentinel is available from the beginning. With powerful crowd control, healing, shielding, and even the ability to resurrect allies, she’s a must-have for intense teamfights.

Cypher

Not a new agent in Valorant, but still a very useful Sentinel in most matches. He excels in gathering intel, quickly revealing enemy positions on the map and marking them for teammates.

Killjoy

Though not a new Valorant character, she remains a strong Sentinel with great area control, debuffs, and offensive abilities. Can effectively handle team fights on her own using her bots and turret for support.

Chamber

Like any other new Valorant agent, this Sentinel brings strong control and high single-target damage. Equipped for both close and long-range combat, he’s effective against solo enemies or groups alike.

Deadlock

Every Valorant agent has control abilities, but this Sentinel is unmatched. Using tech-based traps, she slows and restrains enemies, and can silently eliminate targets if her team is far away.

Brimstone

Not a new character in Valorant, but one of the most solid choices over the years. A top-tier support with powerful AoE skills, solid crowd control, and enough damage to dominate even in solo play.

Viper

Wondering how to unlock all agents in Valorant? Start with this support. She offers excellent area control, AoE with lingering damage, and can assist the team both at the start and during endgame fights.

Omen

To unlock Valorant agents, level up contracts. A great place to start is with this hero. Perfect for solo players, he moves quickly across the map, hunts enemies, and either eliminates them or relays their positions to the team.

Astra

Not all Valorant agents can do what she does. Her unique control mechanics make her nearly irreplaceable in many match situations — whether early in the round or during the final moments.

Harbor

Like all support agents in Valorant, Harbor can easily control groups of enemies, slowing and stunning them. Most of his abilities are AoE, making it easier to clear out entire areas.

Clove

Not every Valorant character has powers like this support. While death means the end for others, Clove harnesses death energy to benefit themselves and harm enemies. For example, they can take down an enemy even after being eliminated.

Vyse

A new Valorant agent capable of suppressing all enemies on the map. This Sentinel’s control skills restrict movement and vision, making them a top-tier pick for fragging when paired with a good damage dealer.

Tejo

A new Valorant Initiator who can clear locations solo. Combines scouting with powerful AoE abilities, offering remote area control. Deadly in close combat with both firearms and grenades.

Waylay

A new Valorant agent who manipulates light to boost mobility, teleport, and control enemies. Even without direct DPS abilities, he remains an effective fighter, using speed and mobility as his main advantage.

Best Agents for Beginners

A new Valorant character isn't always the best pick — especially for beginners still learning the basics of the game. In fact, the default roster is enough for solid matchmaking up to mid-high ranks.

But if you’re looking for a top beginner list, here it is:

  • Sage. Great survivability and zone control, valuable for the team.
  • Phoenix. Healing, flash, and a strong ultimate — perfect for beginners.
  • Brimstone. A simple controller with effective abilities.
  • Raze. A classic DPS that’s easy to learn the game with.
  • Sova. A solo initiator with strong control and a powerful ultimate.

In general, play whoever you like most. The more agents you master, the easier it’ll be to climb the ranks and pick the right ones for random matches and team fights.

New Valorant Agents

How to unlock characters in Valorant? Just complete their contracts. Especially when new agents are released — they’ll likely be meta for a while:

  • Vyse, added in August 2024.
  • Tejo, introduced in January 2025.
  • Waylay, released in March 2025.

New agents are also interesting because they bring fresh mechanics and abilities, often useful in current patches.
