Blizzard announces Diablo 5 set after Diablo’s victory

At BlizzCon 2026 Blizzard revealed Diablo 5, a sequel set after Diablo conquers Sanctuary, with a target release window of spring 2029.

Blizzard unveiled Diablo 5 during a developer panel at BlizzCon 2026, confirming the next mainline entry will take place after Diablo has conquered Sanctuary. The studio set a spring 2029 target for release but did not provide a firm date.

The company said it is shifting development resources from ongoing Diablo 4 content into the new sequel project. Blizzard also confirmed Diablo 4 will continue to receive updates, including an Amazon class scheduled to arrive next year. Platforms, pricing, beta plans, preorder details and regional windows were not announced.

Blizzard narrative lead Joe Shely told the audience the premise in stark terms: “The heroes are gone, Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won.” He framed the game with a question for players: “What must you become when the world has already fallen?” Those remarks indicate the title will place players in a world governed by the demon lord rather than defending Sanctuary from a rising evil.

Developers highlighted a tonal shift in story and promised additional gameplay and narrative details later in BlizzCon programming. The panel provided limited information on mechanics, classes, multiplayer systems and progression, with further specifics to appear in upcoming presentations and developer updates.

Diablo is Blizzard’s long-running action role-playing franchise centered on the conflict between humanity and demonic forces on Sanctuary. Diablo 4 has received post-launch seasonal content and updates since its release; Blizzard plans the Amazon class for that live game before moving primary focus to Diablo 5.

Blizzard intends to release more information about Diablo 5 throughout BlizzCon 2026, including further commentary from the development team and likely gameplay footage. For now, spring 2029 remains the studio’s announced release window.
