Rockstar keeps GTA 6 online format ‘closely guarded’

Rockstar Games calls GTA 6’s online player format a ‘closely guarded secret’ and is withholding multiplayer specifics until it chooses to disclose them.

Rockstar Games described Grand Theft Auto 6’s online player format as a ‘closely guarded secret’ and said it will keep specific multiplayer details private as the game approaches release.

The developer declined to disclose key elements of the online component, including how many players each session will support, how multiplayer modes will be structured, progression mechanics, monetization plans, cross-play support and server architecture. Rockstar also did not explain how single-player content will relate to the online portion.

No timeline was provided for when the studio will reveal those details. Rockstar has issued periodic updates on development milestones while withholding many design specifics until it decides to make formal disclosures.

The secrecy includes the question of whether GTA 6 will follow the persistent, regularly updated service model used by GTA Online or use a different setup. GTA Online launched with Grand Theft Auto V in 2013 and has been sustained with ongoing content updates.

Rockstar is a studio within Take-Two Interactive, which holds the Grand Theft Auto trademarks. The company did not connect the statement about the online format to any release date, beta plans or a schedule for future multiplayer announcements.
