Black Flag Resynced drops environmental finishers

Resynced remaster removes disarm-and-grab finishers and prevents hidden blades as primary weapons while updating visuals and tightening combat, a reviewer reports.

Reviewer Paul published his assessment on July 16, 2026 after playing Ubisoft’s Resynced update to the 2013 title Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. He reported that the remaster removes environmental disarming finishers and prevents hidden blades from being equipped as primary weapons, while delivering a significant visual polish and revised combat.

Paul noted the combat overhaul emphasizes posture-breaking and parry mechanics. Finishers now require the weapon Edward Kenway is already carrying; players can no longer disarm enemies and use their pistols or blades from the environment to finish a fight. The reviewer described the new system as more precise and consistent.

The original game allowed improvised finishers that let Edward grab an opponent’s weapon or firearm to end an encounter. Paul wrote that mechanic made fights feel improvised and messy in a way that matched a pirate’s approach to combat. He praised the visual upgrades and the cleaner, timing-based combat, but added that removing environmental grabs reduced moments of spontaneity.

Paul also pointed out that Resynced downplays the franchise’s signature hidden blades. In the original story Kenway discards the hidden blades early and uses them later only as part of a disguise; the remaster aligns gameplay with the character’s rapiers and pistols by not allowing hidden blades to serve as primary weapons.

Paul reported that he enjoyed the remaster overall and called the experience enjoyable, while noting he would have preferred retaining the improvised finishers. The update focuses on modernizing graphics and smoothing mechanics, and changes to finishers and weapon options reflect the design choice to streamline melee encounters and emphasize timing-based play over on-the-fly interactions.
