Path of Exile 3.29 removes socket colors; campaign skip rejected

Grinding Gear Games will remove socket colors, rebalance over 100 skills and add underwater combat in Path of Exile 3.29, but players cannot skip the campaign.

Grinding Gear Games is changing long-standing Path of Exile systems in the 3.29 update, removing socket colors, rebalancing more than 100 skills and adding underwater combat. The studio confirmed players will not be allowed to skip the campaign and jump straight to endgame content.

Game Director Mark “Neon” Roberts and Game Designer Christopher “Octavian” Laferriere discussed the changes in a studio interview. The team said the decision to remove socket colors was tested internally and reviewed across the studio before approval. Laferriere noted that few elements are untouchable: “there’s nothing that’s ‘in stone,'” while stressing changes are not made lightly.

The studio rejected requests to add a campaign-skip option that would let players start directly in the endgame or level only through maps. Roberts argued that allowing instant access reduces players’ connection to their characters and the knowledge gained while progressing. Laferriere, along with co-founder Chris Wilson and Game Director Jonathan Rogers, opposes map-only progression from level one.

Path of Exile 3.29 will introduce underwater combat and a new pinnacle boss tied to Breach encounters. Access to that boss will require an item called Zorath’s Eye of Malevolence. Laferriere expects players may solve the related puzzle within a few days after the league launches and said core mechanic changes will be available on the Standard league for players with established characters and resources.

A gameplay addition in 3.29 is a third Scion ascendancy, the Luminary, focused on permanently recruiting and outfitting the returning Mercenaries of Trarthus. The studio said making mercenaries a permanent part of a build requires an opportunity cost, so adding the feature as an ascendancy slot was chosen to give players a clear trade-off. The team said further ascendancies beyond three per class are unlikely.

Grinding Gear Games also described its approach to supplemental content. The studio has run smaller events alongside main leagues, including the Return of the Ancestors and an economy-reset style event tied to Path of Exile 2. Laferriere said the TotA return required relatively few man-hours to prepare. Roberts added that some mechanics, such as Trials, are unlikely to move to Path of Exile 2 soon because their animations and effects do not yet match the newer engine.

On timing, Roberts confirmed Path of Exile 3.30 will arrive before the full Path of Exile 2 1.0 launch, which is scheduled for the end of the year after Exilecon in November. He stated the team has gained speed and confidence in building acts following recent development work.

Socket colors have been a core Path of Exile mechanic for nearly two decades. The 3.29 rebalancing effort affects more than 100 skills and aims to change how players plan builds. Path of Exile 2 remains in active testing with a 0.5 expansion that added new league mechanics and puzzles, and GGG plans to continue running both main leagues and smaller supplemental events as development proceeds.
