PUBG Endures as Benchmark for Battle Royale Games

Launched in March 2017, PUBG reached a 3.2 million Steam peak in January 2018 and keeps its core gameplay while adopting live-service features.

PUBG launched in March 2017 with about 65,000 players at release. It exceeded one million concurrent players in under five months and recorded a Steam peak of 3.2 million concurrent users in January 2018. That 3.2 million peak has not been exceeded; later high-profile launches reached peaks near 2.4 million and 2.1 million.

The game began as the work of Brendan Greene, who made battle royale-style mods for the military simulator Arma before creating the standalone PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. The title uses a match format in which up to 100 players drop from a plane, scavenge weapons and gear, and fight inside a shrinking safe zone.

Current versions of PUBG include live-service elements such as battle passes, branded tie-in events and an AI teammate option. The core gameplay sequence remains focused on tactical decision-making and firearm fundamentals. Players and analysts identify map and positional awareness, cautious looting and methodical engagements as central mechanics. Movement and aiming are more conservative than in some other battle royale games, and long-range encounters and positioning are frequently decisive.

A typical match centers on three sets of choices: selecting a drop location, prioritizing which equipment to collect and moving to stay inside the shrinking circle. Those choices produce a slower pacing with higher stakes compared with faster, mobility-focused titles. Squad play continues to be a social element of the game, with teams coordinating landings, sharing attachments and using voice communication.

Later battle royale titles introduced faster traversal and more ability-driven combat, while adopting the large-scale last-man-standing format popularized by PUBG. The game remains available on PC and consoles and receives regular content updates alongside its original mechanics.

“There is absolutely no feeling like being in the last circle in PUBG — scanning the environment, looking for the slightest hint of movement, my heart beating out of my chest,” wrote a games writer in July 2026.
