Belmont’s Curse Names Rose Belmont as Protagonist for Story

Developers say Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor and Sypha, is the protagonist because inheriting Sypha’s curse and avenging her death fit the story’s core.

Developers on Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse say they chose Rose Belmont as the game’s lead after story development made that character the best fit. The decision grew from plot and character work, not from a preset choice about the protagonist’s gender.

Director Yukiko Hokao recounted that the team did not begin production with a female lead in mind. “At the start we hadn’t decided that the protagonist would be a woman,” she said, adding that as the world and story were shaped, the role came to suit Trevor Belmont’s daughter.

Early narrative drafts positioned Sypha Belnades as having died before the game begins. That thread shifted the emotional focus to the relationship between parent and child and to the daughter’s motivation to confront her inherited fate.

Creative director Emmanuel Nouaille described the narrative logic behind Rose’s role: “Considering her mother Sypha’s curse would be inherited by her daughter, there’s a bond between parent and child. There is a strong connection between the two, and it gives her a clear motivation to avenge her mother’s death and face her cruel fate. From this, the protagonist became Rose Belmont, and the role was best suited for a woman.”

Belmont’s Curse is set in Paris in 1499, 23 years after the events of Dracula’s Curse, and follows Rose as she descends into a castle that appears in the city. The game is being developed by Evil Empire and Motion Twin, studios known for Dead Cells and The Rogue Prince of Persia.

Konami lists Belmont’s Curse as the 26th mainline Castlevania entry and described it as the start of several new franchise products. The publisher plans a 2026 release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Developers emphasized that Rose’s role emerged from the game’s plot needs: inheriting Sypha’s curse and the drive to avenge her death provide the central motivation and emotional anchor for the story.
