Fan ports Grand Theft Auto to Nintendo GameCube
A hobbyist released an unofficial Grand Theft Auto port for the Nintendo GameCube, offering a playable build for original consoles and GameCube-compatible emulators.
A fan developer has released an unofficial port of Grand Theft Auto for the Nintendo GameCube. The build runs on original GameCube hardware and on emulators that support the console.
The project adapts the game’s code to the GameCube’s processor and graphics systems and maps controls to the standard GameCube controller. The release includes support for the console’s native resolution and addresses differences in storage and media formats between the original platform and the GameCube.
The developer published the build and installation instructions online, with compatibility notes for different GameCube models and for several emulator programs. The package explains how to create a working disc image or cartridge using legally owned game files.
The developer presented the port as a personal, noncommercial effort and made clear the project is not affiliated with Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive, the series’ rights holders. Release materials note that distributing copyrighted game files could lead to takedown actions by rights holders.
Members of retro gaming and modding communities have tested the port and discussed technical details. Some testers reported reduced frame rates and audio differences compared with versions on other platforms, while others noted that the project makes the title playable on a console that never received an official release.
The GameCube, launched in the early 2000s, did not receive an official Grand Theft Auto release. Hobbyists have previously produced unofficial builds and homebrew tools to bring games to platforms that missed original launches. The developer’s documentation includes technical notes that may help others attempting similar conversions.
