PS5 Pro beta may enable Enhanced PSSR by default
Invite-only PS5 Pro firmware beta would turn on Enhanced PSSR for games with standard PSSR and adds a system toggle to disable the feature.
Sony is testing a PS5 Pro system software beta that would enable Enhanced PSSR by default for games that already support standard PSSR. The update is limited to invited PS5 Pro owners and includes a system setting to turn the feature off.
Beta invitations describe a new Enhance PSSR Image Quality option in the system settings. The option is enabled by default in the beta but can be switched off by players who encounter compatibility or performance issues.
Enhanced PSSR is an upgraded, AI-driven form of Sony’s upscaling technology intended to improve image quality. Until now, developers had to patch individual games to enable the enhanced processing. Under the firmware change in testing, any title that includes the original PSSR implementation would automatically run with the enhanced upscaling without requiring additional game updates.
The beta is only available by invitation to PS5 Pro owners. Sony has not announced a public release date or a schedule for wider distribution. Games that never implemented PSSR will still require developer patches before they can use Enhanced PSSR.
Sony’s PS5 Pro lead architect, Mark Cerny, previously described an approach in which developers would choose when to add Enhanced PSSR to their titles. The firmware beta would apply the enhanced processing automatically to games that already include the base feature while leaving titles without PSSR unchanged until developers add support.
Sony has not published a compatibility list or detailed performance figures for the enhanced option. The effect on frame rates and visual output will vary by game and implementation. For now, the automatic Enhanced PSSR option remains in a private beta for PS5 Pro owners, and developers must continue to add base PSSR support before system-level enhancements can take effect.
