State of Decay 3 may miss day-one Game Pass debut
Microsoft removed Undead Labs from its first-party lineup in July 2026, putting State of Decay 3’s promised day-one release on Xbox Game Pass in doubt.
In July 2026, Microsoft removed Undead Labs from its first-party studio lineup as part of an overhaul of Xbox’s studio strategy and a round of layoffs. Undead Labs is seeking a new publisher following the separation.
State of Decay 3 had been announced as an Xbox-exclusive first-party title and was promoted as a day-one release for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. That designation was made while the studio was part of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios.
Since Undead Labs was disassociated from Microsoft, the company has not reaffirmed the game’s Game Pass status. With the studio looking for a new publishing partner, contractual commitments tied to Microsoft ownership are unlikely to remain in effect.
If Undead Labs signs with another publisher, that partner will negotiate distribution and platform terms for State of Decay 3. A new agreement could include a Game Pass release, or it could set different launch arrangements.
Players and subscribers currently face uncertainty about whether the game will be available on Game Pass at launch. Microsoft and Undead Labs have not issued a joint update clarifying the game’s platform or subscription plans. Until either party makes an official announcement, earlier statements listing State of Decay 3 as a day-one Game Pass title should be treated as outdated.
State of Decay 3 is the next entry in Undead Labs’ survival series, noted for open-world mechanics and community management gameplay. Xbox Game Pass has previously included first-party releases on launch day; the studio’s separation represents a change in the context for this title.
