Subnautica 2 update adds nonlethal deterrents

Subnautica 2’s 1.1 update, released July 8, adds stronger creature flinches and a Sonic Resonator stun to deter predators while keeping lethal options disabled.

Unknown Worlds released Subnautica 2 update 1.1 on July 8, adding improved creature flinches and a stun state for several species when hit by the Sonic Resonator. The studio says the changes give players nonlethal tools to deter predators while keeping permanent kills disabled.

The studio described the patch as focused on quality-of-life and defensive systems. Patch notes explain the intent is to make encounters feel more reactive without changing the game’s survival tone.

Game Director Anthony Gallegos wrote that “most creatures in the game now have good flinches, so if you smack them with the survival multitool, you’ll get a reaction out of them before they flee.” The update adjusts the Sonic Resonator so many creatures enter a distinct stun state; stunned animals float downward, creating a clearer window for escape or repositioning.

Several changes reduce unexpected danger in hazardous areas. Bloom Parasites that guard Angel Combs now give clearer detection and aggression signals. Voice line prioritization has been altered so critical warnings play immediately instead of queuing behind less urgent lines. Field notes collected in the databank will play only when the player chooses, rather than auto-playing on pickup.

Progression systems received updates. New biolabs placed in early-game areas let players find and swap biomods. Later in the current progression a new scanning tool will allow players to unlock additional passive biomod slots, removing the prior limit of a single passive slot. The in-game PDA has been reorganized with new categories and an updated interface.

Inventory and multiplayer-adjacent features were adjusted. A new personal storage chest keeps a player’s items separate from shared fabricators and processors to preserve individual inventories in multiplayer sessions.

Unknown Worlds outlined follow-up updates. A co-op-centered 1.2 update is planned some weeks after 1.1 and will add player trade, reviving, proximity voice chat and emotes. The studio said a larger EA2 update is scheduled later in the year to move players into the Collector Leviathan’s true home and advance progression and story.

Teasers for the later update mention new wreck-based discoveries with light puzzle elements, tighter visual cohesion, an additional vehicle chassis and a new region containing multiple Great Jaws. Developer comments and promotional art indicate a possible new PRAWN-like suit and heavier-vehicle gameplay in that zone.

Unknown Worlds described update 1.1 as the first of multiple planned updates and invited player feedback through official channels as development continues.
