Xbox raises Series X and S prices in Europe ahead of GTA 6
Xbox has raised recommended prices for the Series X and Series S, with the largest increases applied in several European countries ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6’s release.
Microsoft’s Xbox division raised recommended retail prices for the Xbox Series X and Series S this week, with the largest increases applied in multiple European markets ahead of the expected launch of Grand Theft Auto 6. The new figures appeared on official Xbox storefronts and have been reflected by several major retailers. The pricing updates took effect immediately in affected countries, while some retailers are still adjusting prices for preorders and existing stock over the coming days.
Microsoft attributed the changes to local value-added taxes, higher import and logistics costs, and recent exchange-rate shifts, saying the adjustments align regional pricing with current market conditions. North American prices were adjusted more modestly, and select retailers continue to offer some promotional bundles at previous price points.
Retailers and industry analysts in Europe pointed to ongoing cost pressures and the upcoming GTA 6 launch as reasons for reviewing regional pricing now. The game, developed by Rockstar Games, is expected to increase demand for new hardware as players seek improved performance. Several European retailers informed customers that the increases aim to cover higher operating costs and to standardize pricing across markets.
A consumer advocate in Brussels criticized the timing and commented, “Raising console prices when a major title like GTA 6 is imminent adds additional cost pressure on gamers.” Retailers reported some buyers are shifting interest to pre-owned hardware or seeking bundle discounts to offset the higher upfront cost.
Microsoft confirmed subscription services such as Game Pass and online multiplayer access are not affected by the console retail price changes. The company highlighted ongoing member promotions and seasonal discounts that may lower the effective purchase price for some customers. Independent sellers and secondhand marketplaces have begun to reflect the new retail values, with used console listings rising in several European online marketplaces.
The Xbox Series X and Series S launched in 2020 and have seen periodic regional price adjustments driven by supply-chain fluctuations and currency movements. Microsoft stated it will continue to monitor market conditions and consumer feedback and may modify regional pricing or expand promotional offers in response to demand. Retailers advised buyers to compare offers, consider bundle deals and use trade-in programs where available to reduce the impact of higher retail prices.
