Doom: The Dark Ages gains enhanced PSSR on PS5 Pro
Update 4 adds improved PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) support for PS5 Pro on July 7, releasing alongside the Revelations expansion.
id Software confirmed Update 4 for Doom: The Dark Ages will enable enhanced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on PlayStation 5 Pro systems on July 7, the same day the Revelations expansion launches. The update will be available to both PS5 and PS5 Pro users.
The enhanced PSSR support is built on Sony’s updated PSSR 2.0 implementation and is specifically tuned for Doom: The Dark Ages running on the idTech8 engine. PSSR 2.0 uses a machine-learning reconstruction algorithm that upscales frames by tracking motion vectors, depth information, exposure and sub-pixel samples to reconstruct missing detail rather than just stretching pixels.
Id Software said the patch targets image clarity and stability during fast combat, where rapid motion, particle effects and overlapping geometry can reduce readability. The update reduces visual noise from thin objects that overlap on screen, and aims to make textures, weapon details and distant geometry remain more consistent while moving.
Players should notice clearer enemy outlines during large fights and crisper distant details that can assist with positioning and targeting. The developer described the changes as providing “cleaner PSSR reconstruction,” and stated the patch will allow for a significantly clearer image than was previously possible on PS5 Pro.
Doom: The Dark Ages uses dynamic resolution, realistic lighting and large battlefields to keep gameplay responsive across hardware. The PSSR improvements are intended to enhance the visual output on PS5 Pro without changing the game’s core performance targets.
Update 4 and the Revelations expansion go live on July 7 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro users.
