Sony halts fan multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part II

Sony requested that a modder not release a planned PvP mod for The Last of Us Part II. The mod had been in development since January and was due to launch in September.

Sony Interactive Entertainment requested that a fan modder not release a player-versus-player multiplayer modification for The Last of Us Part II. The modder, known online as Speclizer, had worked on the project since January and planned a public release in September.

Speclizer posted regular development updates on YouTube and demonstrated full team matches between the Seraphite and WLF factions, public matchmaking and pre-match loadout options. The work received part funding through the creator’s Patreon page.

On X the modder wrote that they “recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released.” They added they were “extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day” and thanked supporters.

Speclizer had also planned a cooperative mode after the PvP release. In a pinned YouTube comment weeks earlier they wrote, “co-op will be worked on after the public release of this PvP mode,” and added that PvP “turned out to be the easier path.”

During development Naughty Dog considered multiplayer features for The Last of Us Part II but released the title as a single-player game. Previous community efforts to recreate an online mode after release did not reach a public launch.

Speclizer wrote they will move on to new projects and invited followers to support future work. Fans and modding communities are awaiting clarification from Sony Interactive Entertainment.
