Creative Assembly: Emperor would approve Total War: Warhammer 40k

At Gamescom Creative Assembly said the Emperor would approve Total War: Warhammer 40k; a preview journalist reached the same view after playing the Armageddon tutorial and early freeplay.

At Gamescom, Creative Assembly presented an Armageddon-focused preview of Total War: Warhammer 40k. Battle Product Owner David Petry said the studio designed the game so campaigns feel close to the action while fitting into a larger crusader theater. A preview journalist played the tutorial and a short freeplay session and reported that the experience matched the studio’s description.

Petry explained the campaign structure: each campaign represents a single solar system within a broader theater of war. The initial release centers on the Armageddon theater. Players move between planets, capture objectives and influence a wider war effort without managing an entire galaxy map.

The session began with a tutorial and moved into freeplay. The playable encounter placed Space Marines against Orks and opened with a Warp arrival and a planetary map showing faction territories. Ground combat uses core Total War controls with changes for the 40k setting, including an updated battle UI that shows troop composition, camera options for close-up trench views and heavy weapon strikes that require timed deployment to simulate orbital delays. A morale mechanic makes enemy forces scatter if their leader is killed or losses accumulate.

Lead Designer Joy Dey said the tutorial and user interface were built for players who are new to Total War as well as returning players. The preview journalist reported the tutorial clarified campaign objectives and reduced menu overload, making it easier to plan attacks and capture objectives in the early freeplay.

At campaign start, players can customize Space Marine chapters with a wide range of visual options and generate names for armies. Creative Assembly staff noted that colorful or unconventional chapter schemes are common among players. The studio also incorporated design lessons from recent 40k titles for camera work, player immersion and campaign progression.

Creative Assembly confirmed the initial roster will include Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks and Aeldari. Petry acknowledged that Chaos factions and Necrons will arrive in future updates and described a staggered roll-out as the plan for expanding the game’s playable factions over time.

Asked whether the Emperor would approve of the adaptation, Petry replied, “I think that the Emperor senses that there is heresy, and as long as we are out to stamp it out – to burn, to purge – he may well approve.” Dey added that the team expects many players to come because of the Warhammer brand and that the tutorial aims to onboard those players while also briefing returning Total War players on new mechanics.

The previewed build combined tactical, ground-level combat with campaign-level strategy. Creative Assembly presented design priorities of readable systems, customization and a modular campaign scope intended to allow future expansion.
